KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Roda Roberts, born in Bombay, India, came to Canada in 1966, where she completed her Ph.D. in French Studies at Laval University. She has taught French, English, translation and interpreting at a number of universities in Canada, the US and India. From 1979 to 1989, she was Director of the School of Translation and Interpretation of the University of Ottawa. In this role, she established a graduate diploma in interpreting as well as one in Spanish translation, and started the first courses in sign language interpreting at the university level. As a professor, she has written or edited a large number of papers and books on translation and interpreting, including L’interprétation auprès des tribunaux. Actes du mini-colloque tenu les 10 et 11 avril 1980 à l’Université d’Ottawa (Ottawa: University of Ottawa Press, 1981) and The Critical Link: Interpreters in the Community. Papers from the First International Conference on Interpreting in Legal, Health, and Social Service Settings (msterdam: John Benjamins, 1997)
In addition to her academic role, Roda has played an active part in the translation and interpreting professions. A CTIC-certified translator, she worked as a freelance translator for the University of Alabama Press and the Government of Quebec for many years. Her work in interpreting covers several facets of the profession. Following a 6-week intensive training course in conference interpreting provided by the Translation Bureau of the Government of Canada (1981), she was accredited by the Bureau and worked as a freelance interpreter at conferences for the Government of Canada in the 1980s. She has also acted as consultant to academic and non-academic institutions setting up interpreting programs; these include Vancouver Community College, the New Jersey Consortium of Educators in Legal Interpretation and Translation (NJ_CELIT), Arctic College, the College of Charleston, the Department of Justice, Northwest Territories, and the Ministry of Citizenship, Ontario. She has been a committee member or consultant for four certification /assessment tests for court interpreters and community interpreters. She has given professional development workshops to court interpreters in New Brunswick and British Columbia and to conference interpreters in New Brunswick and Ontario. She has been an active member of translators and interpreters professional associations in Canada and has been on the organizing committee of many national and international professional conferences.
Since retiring from her full-time position as Full Professor at the University of Ottawa, Roda has kept very busy as a teacher giving workshops, as a researcher completing the Bilingual Canadian Dictionary, and as a interpreting consultant helping to develop an interpreter certification test.
