Join us on April 25 & 26, 2008 in Dallas/Fort Worth, TX for the Second Annual Symposium on Language Access. This event is the largest of its kind in Texas. The TAHIT Symposium is designed for the various stakeholders in healthcare language access. With a two-track program featuring se ssions for both healthcare providers and translator/interpreters, the TAHIT Symposium is the largest educational event in Texas supporting equal access to health care for everyone.

Court Interpretation Skills Workshop

This workshop will cover the different techniques used for simultaneous interpretation, consecutive interpretation, and sight translation, giving students the opportunity to polish their skills and legal terminology. Ms. McCabe will also discuss the Georgia Court System. The workshop will be open to all GSU students currently enrolled in, or graduated from, the Translation and Interpretation Program and to all Certification Exam Candidates that have taken the Orientation Workshop.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
The FIT Committee welcomes abstracts from NAJIT members working in this area. Please note that the abstract deadline is December 31, 2007.

Invited are translators, interpreters, lawyers, teachers and students to submit their contributions from research, teaching and practice in the following topical areas.

• Basic and further training;
• Translating and interpreting for the courts and the public authorities, including the social and health system;
• Statutory basis, professional and legal status;
• Intercultural communication;
• Sign languages and the languages of the new EU Member States, as well as their different legal proceedings;
• Terminology;
• Applying new technologies;
• Ethics of the profession.

Abstracts should run about 250 words and should be sent by fax or e-mail to Liese Katschinka, FIT Committee Chair, before 31 December 2007 at:

Advanced Skills Training for

Professional Spanish Court Interpreters

Las Vegas, Nevada

This 13-hour workshop will focus on the three modes of interpretation. Instruction will be primarily directed at developing the skills needed to interpret effectively in a judicial environment. All class periods will have a practicum component. Interpretation, memory and listening techniques will be presented and discussed. This is a very intensive, hands-on course that will allow participants to:

1. Identify, through objective evaluations, their current level of knowledge and abilities in each of the three modes of interpretation.

2. Develop interpreting skills by actively interpreting during class and receiving individualized feedback from facilitator as well as advise on how to improve performance.


3. Ascertain progress by evaluating performance after workshop and comparing results to baseline.

At the end of the two-day workshop, participants will be able set production goals and elaborate their own study programs and materials.
