Critical Link 7 will bring together over 400 stakeholders in community interpreting. Over their five days together, conference-goers will focus their attention on the ways in which interpreting research and practice have made a solid contribution to the globalized society of the 21st century.

SOS International LLC is hosting an open house in search of Spanish Linguists that can perform office based translations and transcriptions.  Assignment lengths vary between 30 and 90 days or longer.
Minimum requirements:

• U.S. citizenship or have been a permanent resident for at least three years, living in the United States for at least five years
• Must possess good credit and be able to pass a criminal background investigation
• Understanding of slang and colloquial expressions in the Spanish language, and ability to translate them into English
• Must pass language evaluations in both the source language and English

Arizona Court Interpreters’ Association: “Weightlifting for Court Interpreters”

The Arizona Court Interpreters’ Association is pleased to announce its upcoming event “Weightlifting for Court Interpreters” which will take place on June 29th, 2013 from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, in Florence, Arizona.

Acclaimed interpreter trainer Agustín de la Mora will provide a full day of modal skills training for court interpreters.  Participants will earn [include #] CEUs from [include states/organizations].

Mr. de la Mora has been featured as a speaker and presenter in several national conventions, including the National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators, the American Translators Association, and the National Association of State Court Administrators.

Cost for this event is $100 (early registration) or $150 (after 6/15/13). Lunch is included.

The Department of Communication's program in Graduate Studies in Translation and Interpreting

EXST204 Conference Terminology and Procedures is offered by Dr. Lynn Visson and is intended for anyone with an interest in international conferences, including translators and interpreters. The well-known phrases "the meeting is called to order" and "the meeting is adjourned" have marked the beginning and the end of countless rounds of negotiations, discussions, debates and decisions. Those individuals who plan, chair and speak at such meetings, as well as those who prepare the documentation and engage in translation and interpretation of the necessary materials, speeches and informal comments need to know both the relevant terminology and procedures and the meaning behind those terms. Dr. Visson will explore the terminology and procedure used at a great variety of meetings to help the student understand the underlying motivations and tactics used by participants to achieve their goals.
 Instructor bio: Lynn Visson received a Ph.D. from Harvard University, taught Russian language and literature at Columbia University and other American universities, and for more than twenty years was a staff interpreter at the United Nations, working from Russian and French into English. She is a member of the editorial board of Mosty, a Moscow-based journal on translation and interpretation, and a consulting editor for Hippocrene Books, NY. Of Russian background, she is the author of many works on interpretation, translation, Russian-American marriages and various aspects of Russian culture, which have been published in both the US and Russia.

The Department of Communication's program in Graduate Studies in Translation and Interpreting

EXST205 Technology Solutions for the Professional Translator is offered by Dr. Jost Zetzsche and is intended for the working professional interested in deepening his/her knowledge of translation technology. This two-and-a-half-day workshop geared toward the professional translator will help attendees equip themselves with the technological solutions they need to succeed and with an understanding of how to implement those solutions. Day 1 will be focused on computer-aided translation (CAT) tools and translation environment tools (TEnTs). Day 2 will continue with the exploration of translation environment tools in the morning and focus on complex file formats and their processing in the afternoon. Day 3 will deal with data resources and machine translation.
Instructor bio: Jost Zetzsche is an English-to-German translator, a localization and translation consultant, and a widely published author on various aspects of translation. He earned a Ph.D. in the field of Chinese translation history and linguistics. His computer guide for translators, A Translator's Tool Box for the 21st Century, is now in its tenth edition, and his technical newsletter for translators goes out to more than 10,000 translation professionals. He co-authored Found in Translation, a book about translation and interpretation for the general public.

Beyond Linguistic Barriers – A United World

The enormous diversity of languages and dialects in the world creates barriers to communication on a daily basis, affecting all areas of life. Human migration and globalization highlight the need for seamless communication across cultures. Professional translators, terminologists and interpreters have an essential role in this regard. Sometimes working under difficult circumstances, for example in fluctuating market conditions or in conflict zones, they nevertheless consistently work to overcome language barriers and bring people closer together.

TTIs (translators, terminologists and interpreters) work at all levels of society. Not only do interpreters help politicians negotiate complicated treaties and agreements to avoid international conflicts and wars, but they also help parents obtain the necessary treatment for a sick child in an emergency room. Translators ensure that machinery can be used safely around the world through professionally-translated technical manuals, and that software is localized so that we can all use it in our primary language. Thanks to translators, we can all enjoy the great literary masterpieces. Terminologists are becoming ever more essential in today’s society, as they support the work of translators and interpreters. The work of terminologists in standardizing language in different domains also enables experts to communicate more easily.

International Translation Day (ITD), celebrated annually on 30 September, is an opportunity to showcase the profession and increase awareness of this vital work. FIT encourages all to mark this occasion in a special way, using this year’s theme of Beyond Linguistic Barriers – A United Worl. A poster reflecting the theme is available here
